A polished mass of amber from the Baltic Sea region of Europe. Amber is the fossilized sap of ancient trees, and can be as much as 20 million years old. Typical inclusions are rounded internal fractures called 'spangles', and occasionally insects that were trapped in the sticky tree sap. Amber has been a popular gem material for centuries and was once believed to have magical powers.
