Fossilized herring (Diplomystus) from the Green River Formation in southwest Wyoming. The fish are approximately eighteen feet in length. The Green River Formation is an Eocene geologic formation with sedimentary layers, named for the present-day Green River, a tributary of the Colorado River. The region is known for its variety of complete, detailed and abundant fish (and other) fossils.
