Palm gardens in the "Souf", a group of oases hollowed out from the Sahara, Algeria. The Soufi planted their palmtrees on the bottoms of man-made craters so that the roots of the trees dip into a hidden subterranean water flow. Fences of palm fronds - seasonally adjusted to the prevailing wind direction - protect the craters against the invading sand.
