An Ivory-billed woodpecker nestling perched on the arm of J.J. Kuhn, in the Singer Tract, Louisiana. March, 1938. The Ivory-billed woodpecker was believed to have gone extinct in the mid-1950s. Live birds were definitively identified in Arkansas in 2004 and 2005, however, meaning that a population has survived.
