Walrus heads (Odobenus rosmarus) Nome, Alaska, USA. Commercial walrus harvesting is outlawed throughout its range, but Alaska Natives (Inuits, Aleuts or Eskimos) may legally kill walrus. However, doing so solely for the ivory (a practice known as "head hunting") is considered wasteful by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and is illegal. Many traditional uses of the walrus have faced with access to modern technology, but tusk carving and engraving remains a vital (and lucrative) art form.
