Calcite with sphalerite from Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Tennessee. Calcite, chemically calcium carbonate, is one of the most widely distributed minerals and crystallizes in the hexagonal system. Calcite also produces strong double refraction of light, a phenomenon first described by Rasmus Bartholin. Specimen dimensions are 7 x 4.5 x 3 cm.
