Silt-laden mine wastewater trickles through the rainforest to join the Ok Tedi River in the Star Mountains of the western highlands of Papua New Guinea. The Ok Tedi winds its muddy way to the Fly River, upon which the ecology and the human population of a large region depend. Operators of the Ok Tedi heavy metal mine have received international criticism for their environmental management.
