This dragonfish (Eustomias fissibarbis), was collected in the Gulf of Mexico between 1,500 and 1,200 meters depth, 2016. This species has a distinctive light organ behind each eye and rows of photophores running down its sides. The barbel has a lure at the end of it that glows in the dark and is used to attract prey items to within striking range of the dragonfish. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project.
