Manioc galls caused by the midge Jatrophobia braziliensis in Loreto, Peru. Unless they infest a plant in huge numbers, these galls have a minimal effect on the plant's productivity. Manioc is also known as cassava and yuca. The starchy, potato-like roots are a staple in the diets of many parts of tropical South America, Africa and Asia.
