12-Spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella) dragonfly on its recently-shed nymphal skin in Ludlow, Massachusetts, in summer. The twelve-spot is a high-flying dragonfly seen mostly from May through September, spending most of its time patrolling the air above shallow ponds. This dragonfly is a major predator on other insects and is prey for birds and even larger dragonflies, like the Green Darner.
