Honeybee swarm (Apis mellifera) in Monterey County, California. Honeybee colonies divide when the queen leaves the old hive, with many of its workers following her in a swarm. The swarm stops at some point and gathers tightly around the queen while scouts search for a new hive location. Once the new location is chosen, the swarm moves in and establishes a new colony. Meanwhile the old hive workers go about feeding select larvae a special diet that results in several new queens. After a battle, the surviving new queen takes over the old hive.
