The Common Discus, Symphysodon aequifasciatus, inhabits the Amazon River and its tributaries. This species has been maintained in captivity and bred to produce color morphs. Dozens of varieties exist in the aquarium trade. This species exhibits parental care as the adults guard their eggs and fan them with water to keep oxygen levels high. The larval fish feed on the skin of the adults for the first few weeks of their lives. This individual photographed in 2012.
