The Mimic Octopus, Thaumoctopus mimicus, was not discovered off of Sulawesi until 1998. This species is named for its ability to contort its body and mimic other animals including the venomous Lion Fish, Pterois sp., stingrays, jellyfish, and aggressive Mantis Shrimp. The species probably inhabits much of the Indo-Pacific. This individual was photographed in 2012.
