Inia geoffrensis, commonly known as the Amazon pink river dolphin, is a freshwater river dolphin endemic to the Orinoco, Amazon and Araguaia/Tocantins River systems of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. It is listed as Endangered by the IUCN due to pollution, overfishing, excessive boat traffic and habitat loss. However it still appears to be quite abundant, partly because native folk lore prohibits killing it for food, and can even be seen in the harbors of most Amazonian cities. Born gray, it slowly turns pink as it matures. Photo Quistacocha zoo, Iquitos, Peru.
