Juniper Hairstreak butterfly (Callophrys gryneus). This species, in the Lycaenicade family (subfamily Theclinae) has a wingspan of 1 - 1 1/4 inches. The butterflies live in old fields, bluffs, barrens, juniper and pinyon woodlands, and cedar breaks. Males perch on host trees to seek females, although this male was found on the ground. They eat nectar from winter cress, dogbane, common milweed, wild carrot, shepherd's needle, butterfly weed, white sweet clover and others. Eggs are a laid singly on tips of host plant leaves, which the caterpillars eat. Chrysalids hibernate. Globally this species is secure, but may be rare in parts of its range. Certain subspecies are vulnerable to extinction.
