Common Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) foraging and collecting pollen from a prickly pear cactus blossom. Pollen grains are adhered over the bee's body by an electrostatic charge created by their fuzziness. Bees play an important role as efficient pollinators of flowering plants. It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination. From their foraging the bees create a hive of beeswax, use the pollen as a source of protein for feeding their larvae, and produce honey.
