Impalas (Aepyceros melampus). Impalas are medium-sized antelopes with reddish brown hair, and white hair inside the ears, over each eye, on the chin, upper throat, belly and buttocks, A narrow black line runs along the middle of the lower back to the tail and a vertical black stripe appears on the back of each thigh. Impalas have unique brushlike tufts of black hair that cover a scent gland located just above the heel on each hind leg. Males have lyre-shaped horns. Both sexes have the characteristic 'M' marking on their rump, which gives it the popular name of 'MacDonald's of the Bush.' Uganda's capital city, Kampala, is name for this animal. When frightened or startled the whole herd will start leaping about in order to confuse the predator. They can leap 30 feet (9 meters) and 8 feet high (2,5 meters). They are prey for almost every large predator, including man. Range: the savannas of Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Nambia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, southern Angola, northeastern South Africa, and Uganda.
