Barrens Buck Moth (Hemileuca maia) Male on Scrub Oak (Quercus ilicifolia). This species flies in the fall and lays eggs in a ring on a twig of foodplant that overwinter. In the mid-atlantic and northeastern US this species is generally found in barrens habitats and on mountain ridges that are populated with Scrub Oak. This male was photographed on a TNC (Nature Conservancy Preserve) in the Poconos of northeastern, Pennsylvania, during the month of September.
