Adult male Mandrill (Papio sphinx, Mandrillus sphinx). Breeding males have more intense coloration on the face and rump. The male's face has deeply grooved stripes: a red central stripe flanked by blue stripes on either side. The male's rump is hairless and the area around the anus is bright red and the calluses are pink and violet. "Mandrill" means "man-like animal". It is also known as 'The Devil of the Fang', so named by the local Fang people. Endangered species. Range: Central West Africa. Jacksonville Zoo, Florida.
