The red-bellied piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri, is one of the three piranha species that are potentially dangerous to humans. However, most of the horrific stories about the savage nature of these fish are nothing more than sensationalized urban myths. This species is among the most widespread of all piranhas, being found throughout the Amazon Basin south to northern Argentina and Paraguay. Photographed immediately after capture in the Rio Tigre, Peru.
