Sleeping Sphecid Wasp (subfamily Ammophila), Anza Borrego State Park, California. This wasp was photographed in dawn light, still clinging to a stem in its sleep posture. Sphecidae is a family of thread-waisted wasps. They build nests in burrows or pre-existing cavities and provision them with paralyzed prey prior to laying an egg.
