Pacific Blue Mussel (Mytilus trossulus), Santa Barbara County, California. The byssus, thread like fibers, can be seen at the base of the shell. These fibers are produced by the mussel for attachment to rocks or other substrate. The barnacles coating the shells are Red Thatched Barnacles (Tetraclita rubescens).
