Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, capturing a field cricket. An amazing native carnivorous plant. When an insect touches the trigger hairs within the trap (a modified leaf) the 2 haves quickly snap shut, trapping the victim. Enzymes secreted by the plant then digest the trapped insect. Native to a limited area of scattered savannahs of eastern NC and adjoining SC.
