Female Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) with nesting material. Like most songbirds, the Eastern Bluebird builds open-topped, rounded nests of grass, sticks, vegetable fibers, and rootlets in a fork of a tree, in a shrub, or tucked under tall grass. In the fall, the sexes may migrate south together, the adults often several weeks or more before the young born that year. The female lays 2 to 7 bluish (or rarely, white) eggs that are incubated primarily by her. The eggs hatch in 12 to 14 days with the hatchlings being fed by both parents and the young ones fledge in another 14 to 20 days. Habitat: fields and woodland edges. Range: New England. Ludlow, MA.
