The Pacific Viperfish (Chauliodus macouni) is a deep water predator. The teeth of this species pierce and hold prey. A row of photophores lines the belly just above an area of clear gelatinous tissue. Prey items include fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. This species migrates at night closer to the surface and back down into the depths by day. This specimen was trawled from 1000 feet depth off of Monterey, California, in November 2007.
