Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus atricaudatus) aka Velvet-tail Rattlesnake. They are considered endangered in Virginia, and threatened in Texas. They are closely related to the Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus). The Canebrake has a dorsal stripe, missing on Timber rattlers. The female retains her eggs internally, and gives birth to live young. This snake generally has a mild disposition and often will not even rattle when caught. Its venom is very toxic.
