Northern snapping turtle (Elseya dentata). This freshwater turtle occurs widely across northern Australia from the Kimberly in the west, through the Northern Territory. It grows to a length of around 35 cms. It lives in large rivers and deep lagoons. Its diet is primarily herbivorous, consisting of various water plants and fallen fruit from overhanging trees. Small amounts of carrion and live animal prey are eaten opportunistically. The animal in the picture is from the Kimberly, Western Australia.
