Yellow-footed Antechinus or Marsupial Mouse (Antechinus flavipes). This small carnivorous marsupial occurs from north-east to southern Australia with a disjunct population in south-western Australia. It lives in woodlands, rainforests and also human habitations. It is both terrestrial and arboreal. It is extremely swift and agile and can move faster than a human eye can follow. It grows about the size of a large house mouse, and is quite ferocious for its size. It can kill and eat vertebrate prey almost as large as itself and is a common predator on hatchling birds while also feeding on insects. The species breeds once a year, and the males die soon after mating in early spring. Up to a dozen young are born and carried in the pouch for around 5 weeks. They then ride on the mother's back until fully weaned at around 3 months. Kuranda, Queensland, tropical northern Australia.
