Hercules Moth (Coscinocera hercules). This is Australia's largest moth, with a 20 cm wingspan. The females (wingspan to 22 cm) have the largest wing area of any moth in the world. The species occurs in rainforests in northeastern Australia and also New Guinea. The male moth (pictured here) has the rear edge of the tail extended into long tails. The adult moths are short-lived; they have no mouthparts and do not feed, dying soon after mating. Kuranda, North Queensland, Australia.
