Ornate Burrowing Frog (Limnodynastes ornatus). The male frog in this photograph is calling in a temporary rain pool while surrounded by fertilized eggs from earlier matings. The species grows to around 4.5 cms and occurs in northern and eastern Australia. It lives in open forests and woodlands, but not rainforests. During the dry season in the tropical north, the frog burrows into the soil and can remain in a dormant state for several months until the start of the rainy season. Lappa, North Queensland, Australia.
