Freckled monitor lizard, (Varanus tristis). This is one of the smaller monitor lizards, (called goannas in Australia), growing to a total length of around 1.2 metres. It occurs widely across the northern half of Australia. It inhabits woodlands and dry forests. Mostly arboreal in its habits, it also lives in rocky outcroppings. It feeds on insects, smaller lizards and occasionally small mammals.
