Giant burrowing cockroach, (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), also known as the Rhinoceros Cockroach. This is the largest, (in terms of weight), cockroach in the world, weighing around 30 gms and growing to 80mm in length. It occurs in northern Queensland and inhabits sandy soils in open forests where it lives in burrows up to 1 metre deep. It feeds entirely on dead and dry eucalypt leaves which it drags down into its burrow. Adult cockroaches occasionally congregate on the surface after heavy rains. This cockroach is flightless and has no odour nor does it carry any diseases. Consequently it is sometimes kept as a pet.
