Two American Toads (Bufo americanus) mating. The smaller male is on top of the larger female. The toads will stay coupled together until the female lays the eggs. The male will fertilize the eggs when they are laid. This image was taken the last week of April in Upstate New York. The toads live in a woodland forest and only return to swamp land to mate and lay their eggs. The toads only mate for about three days. Of particular importance in this image is the second eyelids the toads uses when underwater.
