The Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) can be found in lakes, ponds, and other slow moving or still bodies of water near damp woodlands throughout the eastern half of the United States. This Red-spotted Newt is one of four subspecies of the Eastern Newt. Adults are aquatic, feeding on eggs, larvae, mollusks, insects, worms, and small crustaceans. The juvenile stage of the Red-spotted Newt, called a Red Eft, is terrestrial and can be found walking along forest floors after rain showers.
