Coral Pipesnake (Anilius scytale) is a burrowing species that spends much of its time underground. Consistent with a subterranean lifestyle its eyes are tiny. When disturbed it buries its head within its coils and raises its tail to resemble a false head. This beautiful and harmless serpent is thought to be a coral snake mimic. It grows to almost 3 feet in length. Because it is rarely seen its population density as well as the extent of its range is uncertain, but it has been found in the rainforests over much of northern South America south to Peru and Brazil. This one was caught and photographed in Loreto, Peru.
