The Rocky Mountain Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) gets its name from the size of its mule-like ears. The mule deer has a white rump patch and a narrow black-tipped tail. It holds its tail down when it runs, unlike its cousin the white-tail deer, which raises its brushy white tail like a flag. The mule deer has the broadest distribution of any game animal in North America, ranging from Northern Canada to Central Mexico. This individual was photographed in the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Reserve in New Mexico.
