The Red Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a large hawk, usually weighing between 2 and 4 pounds. As with most raptors the female in nearly one third larger than the male and may have a wingspan of 56 inches. The adult has a rufous-colored tail that may or may not have a black terimal bar. The back and wings of adults are dark brown. The underside is usually light with a dark belly band and a cinnamon wash on the neck and chest. This species shows a great deal of individual plumage variation. This individual was photographed in Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Reserve of New Mexico.
