The stinger of the cicada killer wasp. The cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus) is one of the largest wasps in North America, with adult females reaching a size of almost two inches. This wasp will catch and paralyze a cicada with its stinger. An egg will be laid in the paralyzed cicada and buried. The new wasp will emerge the following summer. These are large powerful fliers.
