Eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna). A breeding male singing from his perch in the spring. Eastern meadowlarks are large birds which feed on grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars and many kinds of wild seed. They build dome shaped nests of grass on the ground, usually in a clump of hay or weeds. Eastern meadowlarks prefer open prairies, fields and meadows.
