Very young eastern gray kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) joey views the world from the safety of its mother's pouch in open eucalypt/cypress forest, western Darling Downs, Australia, during a good season. In drought, juvenile mortality increases first, but populations recover rapidly after good rains, aided by diapause (fertilization of dormant egg while previous embryo develops, allowing continuous breeding).
