Victoria, Australia. Camels (Camelus dromedarius) used for high-country trekking in Paddock at Merrijig, near Mansfield. The natural range of C. dromedarius extends from north-west India to north-west Africa; they were also introduced by humans into Australia during the 19th century. Camels are well-adapted to life in the desert. Their hump contains fat which can provide both their nutritional and water needs over prolonged periods. Their feet are wide, allowing them to walk on soft sand, and have thick soles to withstand the ground's heat. They are able to close their nostrils against airborne dust and their eyes are protected by thick eyelashes.
