One Billion Mark Note. December 1923. The hyper-inflation that followed the First World War. saw real suffering in Germany when notes like this would hardly buy a box of matches. At the peak of the inflation notes were issued for as much as 100 billion marks. Workers were paid several times daily and given time off to buy essentials before inflation swept the value of their notes away.
