Late 20th century wood, paint, feathers, metal and wool mask from the Chewa people in Malawi. With the red face mask it represents the well-known chief of a neighbouring group. In Chewa masquerade outsiders are classed as 'creatures of the bush' like wild animals. The Chewa are a people of Central and Southern Africa. The Chewa are closely related to people in surrounding regions such as the Tumbuka and Nsenga.
