James Prescott Joule's (1818-89) apparatus for determining mechanical equivalent of heat. Vessel of water, oil or mercury contains vanes attached to spindle. Cord attached to drums wound round spindle. Weight descending against scale rotates vanes. Raising and lowering weights raises temperature of fluid. From rise in temperature and distance travelled energy used can be calculated. Engraving 1881. Photo via Newscom
