George Chinnery.Half-length portrait of James Weir Hogg; to front; dressed in dark coat and white stock; against a dark red curtain; c. 1820-5. James Weir Hogg (1790-1876) practised at the Calcutta Bar from 1814-22; and was Registrar of the Supreme Court from 1822-33. In that year he returned to England; where he entered Parliament. He became a Director of the East India Company in 1839; and Chairman in 1846 and 1852; 鈥榬epresenting; practically; the E.I. Co. in Parliament' (Buckland). He was made a Baronet in 1836; and became in 1858 one of the original members of the Council of India; from which he retired only in 1872. Hogg looks relatively young in this portrait which must have been taken during Chinnery's last years in Calcutta.c. 1820 -1825.Foster 852London; British Library.
