鈥楥aptain Robert Monteith (in the uniform of the Irish brigade). Monteith was recruited from the U.S. to command the Irish brigade raised by Roger Casement. He had served in the British Army. Monteith had joined the Irish Volunteers and become a drill instructor. When war broke he declined to serve the British Crown. He emigrated with his family to the USA. Montieth with Casement and another man; Daniel Bailey; travelled by U-boat from Germany to Ireland and arrived on 21 April 1916.Monteith avoided capture; unlike his two companions; and in December 1916 made his escape from Ireland to Liverpool; and then on to New York.
