Undismayed by the ocean's width; Hanuman swells himself to an immense size and; using the still-burning mountain Mahendra as a launch pad; hurls himself into space and across the ocean to the island kingdom of La?ka. The Ocean encourages Mainaka; the undersea mountain that guards the entrance to hell; to rise up and assist Hanuman in his flight. The mountain rises above the waves and its personification; crowned on top of his golden; flower-strewn mountain; tells Hanuman to rest; but Hanuman merely touches it with his hand and leaps off again.Udaipur; c. 1653.From: Ramayana.Add. 15296 (2); f. 84London; British Library.
