Kumbhakar?a approaches Rava?a; who is seated in his Pu?paka chariot rather than his proper throne; and then bows before him; while outside the walls of La?ka; Vibhi?a?a tells the astonished Rama and his friends the story of Kumbhakar?a. Vibhi?a?a says that his brother Kumbhakar?a was such a scourge of the earth that Brahma cursed him to be perpetually asleep; but that; on appeal from Rava?a; Brahma agreed that after six months of sleep he could be awake for one day.
