Grant is seated in a red armchair; his right hand resting on the arm; his left on a red covered table on which lie papers; an ink-well and quill. He wears a black suit; white stock and his hair is white. A red curtain is draped on the top left-hand side. Charles Grant went to India 1767-71; as a private trader. He served in the Company's Bengal cadre 1772-90. After retirement he became an MP in 1802; a Director of the East India Company 1794-1803; Chairman 1805-06; 1809-10 and 1815-16. He was prominent in the Company's opposition to the policy of Marquess Wellesley; was a staunch supporter of missionary and educational work in India; and played a leading part in the establishment of Haileybury College.
