JACOB OF QUERCIA (circa 1374 - 1438); nickname of Jacopo di Pietro d'Agnolo di Guarnieri; Italian sculptor. His style was drawn to the late Gothic style by Giovanni Pisano; opening in an original way to the classicist influences of the emerging Florentine Renaissance. His singular art did not have direct prosecutors; but could perhaps be later accepted by Michelangelo. The portrait is enclosed in a frame decorated with caryatids holding the tools of art and an allegory of sculpture. Colored illustration on a 16th century xylographic basis; from the treaty 'Le Vite de' the most outstanding painters; sculptors and architects' by Giorgio Vasari (30 July 1511 - 27 June 1574); second enlarged and revised edition; Giunti; Florence 1568
